Packer Exec To Talk At March 10 Cattleman's College

JBS's Chandler Keys to address cattle pricing changes at Pennsylvania Cattleman's College late this week.

A top executive with the largest meat-processing business in the world will be a featured speaker at the Pennsylvania Cattleman's College, Saturday, March 10 at the Pennsylvania Livestock Evaluation Center near Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa. Chandler Keys, head of government affairs and industry relations for JBS USA LLC, will discuss how cattle producers can navigate through huge changes now occurring in the beef business.

There have been record feed costs, record finished-beef prices, and record feeder-calf prices in the beef industry. Nearly all of them have happened within the past year, points out John Comerford, Penn State beef specialist and conference coordinator.

WILL BLACK REALLY BE GREEN? Experts at the Cattleman's College will be talking about how the "black premium" fits the beef marketing grids now and in the future.

"This is new territory for the business and producers, and some new ideas and new ways of doing things may be needed," he adds. "Keys will share his insight and ideas that can help beef producers be more profitable in these unusual times."

In addition to Keys' presentation, the program will include farmer panels discussing ways to increase the value of feeder cattle, a sire-selection workshop, animal health and reproduction information, and a beef quality-assurance recertification opportunity. Also on the docket are: a feeder's insight on what kind of cattle to buy, bull-picking tips for crossbreeding programs, plus a look at what pasture rental rates are worth.
